Dolby and Sony's New Patent Pool May Be Music To Your Ears

July 8, 2021

--

Dolby Laboratories Inc. (“Dolby”), Sony Group Corp., and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft have announced the creation of a patent pool containing more than 90% of the patents needed to implement the new MPEG-H 3D Audio standard.

This new audio standard was developed to create a three-dimensional sound experience on mobile devices, televisions, and in automobiles. Dolby’s Via Licensing will run the patent pool.

Content creators such as musicians will get access to the technology in the patent pool for free, with licensing fees being charged to makers of devices incorporating the technology on a per-unit basis.

The new MPEG-H 3D Audio standard will create surround sound without requiring multiple speakers, and will reportedly be compatible with devices such as standard headphones.
